Like a friend of mine pointed out : the difference in the sound of a carved-top instrument in comparison to a flat-top instrument is that the Ctop sounds more "compressed". It has a concentrated, punchier response and still has a short enough scale length to impart the characteristic percussive sound that is found in mandolins.
 On a maple and englemann OM I recently completed for a Klezmer player in New Mexico, I was again quite charmed by the tone-and I am a dyed-in-the-wool bouzouki player.

5-COURSE OM

 Available only with a carved-top configuration, I can build a 10 string 'mid-scale' cittern. Adding a low D course on the bass end will give an sample tuning of DGDAE
