- New Tailpiece concept.
Made of cast bronze and pin-hinged, this improvement adds a more distinguished look.
Co-designed by Hornby Celtic Jeweller Kurt Morrison, it provides ease of ball-end string-changing and accomodates all mandola and larger instruments including 10-string citterns. The heavier weight also distributes a touch more sustain all around.

PRICING.
As you will notice my pricelists start with a base top wood of cedar. This is becasue I basically get my red cedar for free. I comb my local beaches here on Hornby Island and find many a cant, block and round of master grade cedar. From there I dry and resaw these pieces for use in my climate controlled shop. In this way it is fairly envrionmental and I lie the price. This is why there is a slight upcharge of using spruce for tops. Each of my designs combines experience with strength, and efficiency with tone. Most importantly, you will hear the quality of the materials and the experience of the craftsman. The instrument's sonic character urges you to play.
After ten years of building, I still use only solid wood in construction. No plastics or laminates. Expect clean design and workmanship inside and out.
You can see images of the various tonewoods I use here.
Tonewood is chosen by me for it's tonal brilliance and vibrant appearance. Let me emphasize that the 'headquarters' of an instrument's character lies in the soundboard. Most of the vibrational signal is processed there. I handplane or carve and tap-tune each soundboard to attain the desired tone colour based on the factors of the species and grain concentration. A smooth energy transference is of course optimum when considering a signal that originates at the bridge and moves through the soundboard to the body. |

finish
I use a gloss water-borne lacquer finish. This sprayed finish is wonderful and compares very well to the nitrocellulose lacquer. Water-borne lacquer is crystal-hard, extremely clear and glossy and is stain resistant. It sounds excellent and I can hear no difference between it and french polish due to the method I use to apply and surface the lacquer.
Neck Finish is a simple hand rubbed semi-gloss oil application. These thin coats protect the wood from moisture. Best of all this feels very nice and makes neck travel quite fast and comfy. I can also spray a gloss finish on request.
